Byway to Danger is the third book in the series, but can be read as a standalone. Meg Brooks is a spy and so is her employer, Cade Yancey. Meg’s job is to collect information and pass it on. Her previous job was with the Pinkerton Detective Agency, a detail I loved.

Sandra Merville Hart, the author, has done a great job in setting the scene. Richmond was a dangerous place, and for a Unionist spy, it was even more dangerous. Both Meg and Cade are in danger, but Cade has another secret. He is part of the Undergound Railway. He keeps this hidden from Meg as long as he can, as he doesn’t want to put her in even more danger.

Byway to Danger shows the differences between people and how hard it must have been to keep secrets safe. Sandra also shares how people reacted to the war in different ways, becoming immune to the sounds of fighting for example. Byway to Danger is the kind of book you wished was a lot longer, as there are so many interesting details that could do with entire chapters!

Cade Yancey is a wonderful character, and I loved how he sings for the fugitives hidden in his wagon. The song tells them about danger, and again, Sandra has pictured it so well. Cade passes people on to the next safe house, but near the end, he has to take a young couple to Freedom Fort, Fort Monroe. This journey is even longer and a lot more dangerous.

I love how Sandra has added Fort Monroe as well as Grand Contraband Camp to the story. I had never heard of it, so this was very interesting. It was the nation’s first self-contained black community, and a few years later, thousands were living there. It was a wonderful detail to add to the book and Byway to Danger takes a new turn when Cade has to involve more people in his dangerous task.

I loved the ending of Byway to Danger. The book is exciting and has a lot of history in, but also a lovely amount of romance. I wished there were more books about the other characters as well, like the lovely couple travelling to Fort Monroe, they are all so interesting!
