Honor in the Mountain Refuge – Misty M. Beller

Honor in the Mountain Refuge is a beautiful historical novel set in the 1800s. It is the story of Telipe a Nez Perce widow who is about to give birth and Chogan, a Blackfoot brave.

The story is a part of a series, but the backstory is very clear, so it reads fine as a standalone novel. Telipe had been kidnapped and Chogan, the Blackfoot brave who had been one of her kidnappers, showed her great kindness.

Chogan shows up unexpectedly near the village where Telipe is staying. He hadn’t been able to forget the beautiful young woman, but he had not realised she had moved to this small village. I love the start of the novel, as it launches you straight into the story, and covers the previous book so well, you feel you can picture it all.

Misty Beller, the author, says she loves to write historical novels that display God’s abundant love through the twists and turns in the lives of her characters. This comes out in Honor in the Mountain Refuge as well. I could picture the people involved and the way Chogan explained why he had travelled this way was beautiful.

There are certainly a lot of twists and turns in this novel. Honor in the Mountain Refuge isn’t just a romance novel, there is plenty of danger as well. A wild cat has been seen near the village. Will Chogan be able to help Telipe and her village? Will the villagers accept him enough to let him stay? I kept turning the pages, needing to find out more.

Misty M Bellar, the author

Telipe is a wonderful character. She seems so quiet and peace-loving, but she is strong-minded and courageous, prepared to do what is right. Her strength shines through in so many ways and She feels like somebody you’ve known for a long time. I love the way Misty describes the others in the village. There were a lot of names to get used to, but the book flows smoothly, drawing you in. It’s easy to picture the different characters, as they’re all unique and special.

Honor in the Mountain Refuge is not just an exciting, romantic novel, but deals with questions of faith in a great way. Its message is simple but runs deep, drawing you in and making you look at God and His power and sovereignty afresh. It also depicts the scenery, making you see the beauty of the place. There is even some herbal knowledge, making the book even more interesting, as there are different aspects to the story.
